My story now this morning so that nephew will know that Aurelio was shut up there at Kiulem.

I am telling this story this morning so that nephew will know that Aurelio was locked up (with a girl in order that they become married) there at Kiulem.

Kiulem is the next barrio downriver where Aurelio had been working as temporary barrio secretary. Traditional, the custom of locking a boy and girl together was done when the father of the girl wanted the boy to become his son-in-law. However, since the girl cannot approach the boy, this method can be used by the father of the girl as a shortcut. However, these days, when boys and girls prefer to become engaged, this sort of action by the elders can be deeply resented.

(He) wasn't locked up (by all the people), it was just Bendet who commanded, Lamintew didn't command because Lamintew at Kiulum just went along with the talk of Alasiga, the talk of Bilusu, the talk of Lungginoy, of those three people that they wanted Aurelio to be locked together (with the girl) by Bendet and Lamintew.

It wasn't done by all the people, just Bendet. Lamintow just went along with the talk of Alasiga, Bilusu and Lungginoy because those three wanted Bendet and Lamintow to lock Aurelio up (together with the girl).

Bendet and Lamintew are uncles of the girl, Lungginoy is Aurelio's mother.

During the course of events, Bendet stood up and grabbed his bolo which was tucked up in the rafters. However, this was quickly taken from him. Surprised, he grabbed a bolo from the sheath of another man. Another bystander tried to stop him and had his hand cut. Then Bendet was restrained, the bolo taken from him, and he was carried out of the house by a number of men. He was still yelling and kicking. My informants tell me that it would not be unusual to slash or kill one's own daughter in order to convince others to act according to one's desires - in this case to give Aurelio in marriage. If he had killed his daughter, this would have resulted in a fight (with bolos) between Bendet and Aurelio's uncle - Datu Umising who is the storyteller.

This is an unusual use of "batasan". The entire sentence is difficult to fully comprehend because I cannot determine the full sense of meaning of "batasan" and "neelehan", but Datu Umising is trying to say that he wasn't afraid of the threats.

Because according to the custom, according to the custom I did not want it.

I did not want it because of the custom.

The implied information and cultural cues here make understanding difficult. Datu Umising did not want to give Aurelio, because he had not been involved in setting up the first marriage and therefore had no reason to give Aurelio to satisfy the problems of Bendet and Lumintew.

It was Ayahan and Insan that had committed an offence because why did they make their child run away - because they didn't want Aurelio as a son-in-law.

Note the the mother is mentioned first this time although usually it was the father that was accused to convincing his daughter to run away. My language helper says that the father may have told the daughter to break it up because Aurelio's family had not provided a carabbao - the uncles wouldn't provide one to give because they had no part in arranging the first marriage.
